Experts are very concerned about infections caused by invasive fungal species, and the numbers are rising rapidly. Two types of fungi are in focus: Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida auris. Both have been classified as particularly dangerous by the WHO. Since the discovery of Candida auris, life-threatening outbreaks have occurred again and again, especially in hospitals. Worldwide, including in Germany. Up to 60 percent of infections are currently fatal. The fungus is spreading rapidly. It has so far been detected in more than 50 countries. Molds such as Aspergillus fumigatus are also a cause for concern, as the fungi are now resistant to many medications and disinfectants.
