Ahmed al-Shara, the leader of the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew the Assad regime in Syria and took control of Damascus and other cities, answered questions from BBC senior editor Jeremy Bowen. Ahmed al-Shara, formerly known as Mohamed Julani, who became the de facto leader of the country after the fall of the Assad regime, chose the presidential palace built by the Assad family in Damascus for the interview. The HTS leader, who said the country was war-weary, said Syria was not a threat to its neighbours or the West.
