The soap nut is a miracle. You only need a small amount of it and you can do incredible things with it. They are a brilliant alternative to no poo or to shampoos and detergents. To wash your hair, lather it up and apply to dry hair, leave it in for a couple of minutes and then rinse it out. If you want, you can do an acidic rinse afterwards, but it is not necessary! It is the perfect alternative to rye flour and also a supplement. However, it is not suitable for washing white laundry, as it unfortunately turns grey after a couple of washes. For ecological reasons, you should bear in mind that soap nuts have come a long way. Unfortunately, they have become much more expensive in their countries of origin because western customers are buying up large quantities. So please use as much as you need (i.e. every now and then) but as little as possible. That is my motto for everything, by the way. The recipe for the decoction, or boiling, is quite simple: bring a handful of soap nuts to the boil in 600-800 ml of water and simmer for 15-20 minutes at a low temperature. The water will then turn a medium brown. This amount is enough for 3-5 hair washes, depending on the length of your hair. Store the liquid in a screw-top jar in the fridge; it will last forever. About 3 weeks… I haven’t tried it for longer than that. VERY IMPORTANT: The soap nut shampoo won’t work if you haven’t made it lather in a blender or with a magic wand. You can put it in the washing machine without lathering it first, though. You can still put the boiled nuts in the washing machine, just in a bag. When cooking, it may smell a bit sour… but the smell will soon disappear.
