The municipality of San Juan de los Lagos is one of the 125 municipalities into which the Mexican state of Jalisco is divided. It is located in the northeast of the state, in the region known as the Altos de Jalisco and its municipal seat is the city of San Juan de los Lagos, one of the most important religious pilgrimage centers in Mexico. The Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos is venerated in the sanctuary located in the head of the municipality of San Juan de los Lagos, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is a tradition that is more than 390 years old. The image is visited by millions of pilgrims a year, coming from all corners of Mexico, part of the United States, Latin America and places in Europe. It is the second most visited in Mexico after the Virgin of Guadalupe on the Tepeyac Hill. Currently, it is reported that between 8 and 9 million people attend each year, while an estimated 2 million pilgrims visit San Juan de los Lagos during the festival of “La Candelaria” on February 2 of each year.
