Approximately 100 years after the Protestant Reformation broke out in Europe in 1517, a council called the Synod of Dort was held. The reason the churches gathered was to reaffirm the doctrines of grace revealed in the scriptures concerning the nature of fallen man and the process of salvation. This council systematized these doctrines into 5 points, known in Portuguese as: 1) Total Depravity 2) Unconditional Election 3) Limited Atonement 4) Irresistible Grace 5) Perseverance of the Saints As Christians, we are bound by nothing but the Word of the Lord, and the Bible alone is our supreme authority. It is in the light of the Bible that we will look at each of these points.
