Kyoto City University of Arts opened in 1880 (Meiji 13) as Japan's first public art school, Kyoto Prefectural Art School. Since then, masters such as Takeuchi Seiho and Yamamoto Shunkyo have taught at the university, and many masters who would go on to shape the Kyoto art world, such as Tsuchida Bakusen, Murakami Kagaku, and Ono Chikkyo, have produced the history of Japanese painting. In 2023 (Reiwa 5), Kyoto City University of Arts moved to the east side of Kyoto Station.
