In addition to being a retrovirus, HIV is also a lentivirus, this category of viruses is called this way because the disease (AIDS) is "slow" to manifest itself. The real disease, AIDS, is not due to the virus, but to the compromise of the immune system (precisely called acquired immunodeficiency), brought about by the infection of the HIV virus.
