The fairy tale tells the story of a rather impractical bookseller Bartholomew, who decides to put an end to his old-fashioned way of life. Everything takes place at a time when being a bookseller meant excellent status and security, so it is not surprising that the bookseller's servant Stanislav briskly, but subtly, offers his daughter Flora as an ideal match. Just at that moment, however, Bartholomew meets the charming Klárka, who comes to buy a book about herbs. And Klárča's aunt, who is a bit of a witch, and a whole bunch of dangerous forest ghosts, led by the Forest Driller, get entangled in all of this.
