[Experiment: Part 1 of the c't uplink with the Raspi alternatives is available in advance and part 2 with two projects in detail on uplink Saturday. Feel free to give us feedback on what you think! Nothing will change about the RSS feeds.] The Raspberry Pi is a great all-rounder when it comes to tinkering with hardware. But currently most models are extremely expensive or even impossible to get. And for some projects such as home servers, NAS or mini cameras, other platforms are much better suited. In c't uplink, Christof Windeck explains the advantages and disadvantages of NanoPi, ESP32, Arduino Odroid & Co. Rockchip boards such as those from NanoPi or BananaPi are often particularly well suited to special applications such as a local firewall or a NAS due to their design and connections. However, some are lagging behind with Linux updates. Mini computers based on x86 like the Odroid H3 have high software compatibility and often have many interfaces, but they usually need more power and are more expensive. Small, economical mini boards like the ESP32 or the Arduino are great for distributing small sensors and cameras around the home and garden, but the computing power is very limited.
