“The Politburo Experiences the German Revolution - Those Who Come Too Late”, a documentary film from 1990 with Hanns Joachim Friedrichs as moderator and Günter Schabowski as a contemporary witness. Based on authentic documents and statements from contemporary witnesses, the film describes how the Politburo of the GDR experienced the period from May to the opening of the Wall in November 1989. All of the important events are touched upon: from the opening of Hungary's border to the West, the rigged local elections on May 7, 1989, the first demonstrations and the beginning of the wave of refugees from the GDR via Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The inability of the party leadership to react to the country's problems is described, which culminates in the celebrations for the 40th anniversary. The film also reconstructs the removal of Honecker and the international press conference in which Schabowski announced the opening of the borders on November 9. In 1991, Martin Wiebel, Cordt Schnibben, Claudia Rohe, Jürgen Flimm, Hans-Christian Blech and Dirk Dautzenberg received the Adolf Grimme Prize with silver for the film.
