The Eight Great Realizations Sutra, translated by An Shigao from Sanskrit into Chinese, was compiled in the Later Han Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Huan of Han (148 AD). At that time, Buddhism had just been introduced to China, and Buddhists had not yet fully understood the teachings. If the entire thick sutra was given to them to read, they would not be able to bear it. Therefore, he used expedient means to extract the essential parts of Buddhism from many sutras and translate them, dividing them into: first, second, third... up to eighth, and compile them into the Eight Great Realizations Sutra, so that those who have just begun to practice can easily grasp the essential points of Buddhism, and then continue to study the other parts in greater depth. For that reason, the Eight Great Realizations Sutra does not have the six types of certifications of Ananda when it was compiled. With only the eight enlightenments here, Buddhists who skillfully apply them in their practice will eliminate all suffering and gradually advance to the level of Bodhisattva until Buddhahood. The effectiveness of the eight enlightenments is truly unimaginable. If anyone practices them, they will undoubtedly receive results. We Buddhists should not look down on this thin sutra. We must ponder it thoroughly and practice it thoroughly to achieve our original vow to escape birth and death.
