Even if exact figures for Germany are lacking, one can assume an annual incidence of 400,000 to 500,000 affected patients. The spectrum of causes is very broad and ranges from "simple, not serious" causes to prognostically significant effusions as a result of, for example, heart failure or a tumor. Very important for you as the affected person, but of course also for the doctors: the cause should always be clarified; because both the need for treatment and the therapy options vary greatly depending on the diagnosis. First of all, let's look at the symptoms. These can go completely unnoticed with a pleural effusion. Smaller pleural effusions do not limit the function of the lungs and are broken down by the body sooner or later. The symptoms only begin when a certain amount of fluid has collected. The symptoms presented by a patient with pleural effusion are mainly determined by the underlying process. Many patients do not have any complaints that can be attributed to the effusion alone. It usually begins with a constant, dry cough and the feeling that breathing is a little more difficult. At this point, people do not usually assume that the illness is dangerous and often decide to wait out the cough or treat it with medication. If the fluid buildup grows, worse symptoms slowly but surely develop. The most common complaint of a patient with pleural effusion is shortness of breath. Treatment of pleural effusion Many pleural effusions are so small that the affected person usually doesn't notice them and they go away on their own. But not with large effusions. As soon as the underlying disease is identified, the pleural effusion is no longer treated, but the underlying disease. Pleural effusions usually go away as soon as the disease has been defeated and fluid management is functioning independently again. In the case of large pleural effusions, however, it may be necessary to treat them with a pleural puncture. For this, a thin hollow needle is inserted through the pleura to the fluid buildup. Fluid can then be drained out once, or a drain, known as a pleural drain, can be inserted, through which fluid is then permanently drained. But more about pleural effusion, the causes, symptoms and treatment, here in the video. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl” you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics relating to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies.
