Dr. Christophe REYNAUD - www.orl-information.fr In this information video for patients, we explain how deafness surgery is performed to treat otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is a hereditary ear disease that causes a progressive loss of hearing. This deafness, which can be unilateral or bilateral, is caused by a blockage of the ossicles of the middle ear that can no longer correctly transmit sound vibrations to the receptor in the inner ear. The aim of otosclerosis surgery is to correct this disorder by fitting an ossicular prosthesis. How is the procedure performed? The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, but local anesthesia may be offered. The ossicles are approached through an incision made through the external auditory canal, which leaves no visible scar. Once the blockage area has been identified, a prosthesis is put in place under the control of a microscope in order to restore the mobility of the ossicles and ensure correct transmission of sound waves. What are the after-effects of the procedure? The post-operative period is simple and generally allows you to return home the same day. However, some temporary inconveniences may be noted. Firstly, the surgeon places dressings at the end of the procedure which obstruct the ear canal and cause a sensation of a blocked ear. Secondly, limited pain in the operating area may be observed in the days following the procedure. Finally, temporary dizziness is also possible. What are the risks of this procedure? Any procedure carried out on the human body, even under optimal conditions of skill and safety, carries a risk of failure and complication. In some cases, hearing recovery may be incomplete. Failures of the procedure are rare but possible. They are most often linked to a displacement of the prosthesis. In some cases, hearing recovery may be incomplete. Serious complications such as significant hearing loss, the onset of dizziness and ringing in the ears or facial paralysis are possible but remain exceptional. Pr.
