The artistic heritage of Natalia Sergeyevna Goncharova belongs to two countries – Russia and France. This is quite natural, since she was born in Russia and lived there for almost half her life. Her best achievements and accomplishments in avant-garde art are associated with Russia. Her departure in 1914 was connected with an invitation to collaborate with Diaghilev’s enterprise and the upcoming work on the scenery for the ballet “The Golden Cockerel”. But a number of circumstances led to Goncharova and Larionov remaining in Europe and settling permanently in Paris. In Russia, she left not only her family roots and connections – and she came from the noble Goncharov family and was a descendant of N.N. Goncharova-Pushkina, the wife of A.S. Pushkin – but also all her paintings. France became a second homeland for Goncharova and Larionov. They worked a lot with Sergei Diaghilev, were famous, but ended their French life in obscurity and poverty. The first lecture of the series "Women of the Russian Avant-garde" will focus on the life and art of Natalia Goncharova. Lecturer: Andrey Sarabyanov - one of the leading specialists and researchers of the Russian avant-garde, historian, PhD in art history, author of several monographs and publications on the Russian avant-garde, curator of the Avant-garde Center of the Jewish Museum, curator of the exhibition "On Demand. Collections of the Russian Avant-garde from Regional Museums", author and compiler of the fundamental 3-volume "Encyclopedia of the Russian Avant-garde" (co-authored with Vasily Rakitin).
