In this video I'm hiking more or less through Nuuksio National Park with ultra-light hiking gear. I've finally managed to get the base weight of my lightweight gear below the magical 5 kg mark, and I've done it without feeling like I've had to give up too many comforts! Base weight refers to the weight of the entire backpack before adding consumables. The base weight usually includes the following items: backpack, accommodation, sleeping system, kitchen, personal hygiene items, first aid kit, loose items and change of clothes, and possibly used dry bags. After the base weight, the backpack usually includes fuel and food, and sometimes drinking water. I haven't included the weight of the equipment related to video production in my equipment list. I recommend that all hikers interested in lightening their backpack weigh all the hiking gear and change of clothes they plan to pack for the hike on a kitchen scale. It can be an eye-opening experience. At least I was surprised at how big a role a change of clothes played in the weight distribution of my own backpack.
