Kilimanjaro is considered doable, but it has its pitfalls: if you don't adapt to the climate for long enough, you risk headaches, nausea and diarrhea and, in the worst case, even cerebral edema. Sleeping in a tent in sub-zero temperatures also takes some getting used to. Everything has to be carried up, so there are three porters per person on the mountain. 60-70,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year. This means that there are already traffic jams in difficult places. As the glaciers melt, water is also becoming scarce. The group soon begins to experience health problems: headaches, diarrhea and nausea alternate. The porters also struggle with altitude sickness. How do they cope with the challenges and will they reach Uhuru Peak? SRF documented their trek. _____________________________________________ ▪ A film by Michèle Sauvain ▪ Collaboration: Lisa Röösli ▪ Reporter/Camera: Matthias Lüscher, Mario Hari ▪ Camera: Oliver Jean-Richard, Robert Neumeyer ▪ Editing: Peter Karlaganis ▪ Production: Franziska Wellinger ▪ Director: Nathalie Rufer _____________________________________________ This is «DOK»: Our in-depth documentaries on topics from society, nature, politics, sport and business.
