The former deputy, niece of Felipe Calderón and Margarita Zavala, Mariana Gómez del Campo organized a forum the day before the election of her ex-boyfriend, Jorge Romero, as national president of the PAN. It was the second edition of the forum, although no one found out. Even though only 1,400 people were following it live, it was interesting to see the patchwork of commitments and hollow ideas that the Mexican right is pursuing these days. The first strange thing is that they have been saying that Mexico “will be Venezuela” but the only ones who really want it to be that way are the PAN members. I say this because the entire forum revolved around the figure of Mrs. María Corina Machado. Who is she, whom Mariana presented as a “heroine,” “warrior,” “world leader for freedom”? She is a former congresswoman who promoted a coup in 2002, paramilitary violence in 2014 and 2017, and called for a US military intervention to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro. María Corina Machado is part of the Inter-American Dialogue, an organization funded by the OAS and the Inter-American Development Bank. But, like the Mexican PAN members, she is a loser. She was unable to win an internal election of the anti-Chavez opposition against Henrique Capriles, who in turn lost to Hugo Chávez by more than a million and a half votes. They continued to lose against Nicolás Maduro, despite the fact that they had the support of the Carter Center and that the US sanctions against the oil country resulted in a food shortage. When the PRI and PAN members refer to “being Venezuela,” they refer to the shortage as if it were a problem of the Venezuelan economic model itself and not a result of the US and European sanctions that María Corina Machado supported.
