The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 The documentary shows the connection between the two world wars 1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945. Four weeks after the assassination of the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The documentary shows how this historical event soon affected the whole of Europe and shaped people well after the end of the war. Among the soldiers on the Western Front at that time were Adolf Hitler and the British Lieutenant Bernard Montgomery. 30 years later they would face each other again. Colorized images illustrate the carefree weeks of the summer of 1914 before the outbreak of war up to the winter turn of the year 1914/15. In between there was the German attack via Belgium into France with the start of the Battle of the Marne and the outbreak of war in the east between Germany and Russia.
