The use of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedicine is an approach with great potential in the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases [1]. In particular, small iron oxide particles are already used as contrast agents in nuclear magnetic resonance images for the observation of blood vessels, macrophages and cell tracking [2]. A very interesting application under study is the use of these nanoparticles for the detection and treatment of brain lesions in the case of neurodegenerative diseases. In this talk we will show the synthesis of uniform magnetite nanoparticles of different sizes by thermal decomposition in an organic medium that allows obtaining particles with controlled size and shape [3]. These particles have shown excellent magnetic properties despite their small size due to high crystallinity and the presence of oleic acid on the surface. The oleic acid-coated particles have been transferred to water by exchanging the oleic acid for dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), which gives the particles high stability in water at pH 7 and free carboxyl groups to conjugate biomolecules. A relationship has been established between particle size, aggregate size, magnetic properties and relaxivity values [4]. Finally, it will be shown how the chemical and biochemical properties of the particles affect their interaction with cells, tissues and organs, as well as the accumulation and elimination of nanoparticles in various organs.
