This church dates back to the Spanish colonial era and still exists today. It was built in 1767 by Franciscan friars and is dedicated to Saint Joseph. History tells us that the parish of San José de Orosi was founded by Franciscan missionaries in the eighteenth century AD, on the site of the Indian village of Orosi, founded in 1570 after the Spanish governor Perafán de Ribera divided the local Indians into encomienda. The town of Orosi is even older: it was a settlement inhabited by Huetar Indians, who occupied the Orosi Valley at the time of the arrival of the Europeans in the sixteenth century.
