They then deal with their difficult experiences, for example, with alcohol or self-harm. In some cases, it may be a so-called borderline personality disorder, which about three percent of the population lives with. Its manifestations typically begin to become apparent in adolescence. People with this disorder experience their emotions very intensely and find it difficult to find emotional stability. Some of the symptoms mentioned may occur in a significantly larger group of people, but if we can live with them relatively well, experts speak of borderline personality traits - they speak of borderline disorder when the symptoms are intense and significantly affect a person's life. In this episode, Barbora Mareková talks to psychiatrist and psychotherapist Genovéva Almassy, who works with young people with mental health problems in a specialized outpatient clinic in the Czech Republic. Genovéva is also a supervisor, lecturer and is also active in research. Barbora asks her about how borderline disorder arises, how it manifests itself and what therapies work for it. How should parents react when they notice signs of self-harm in their child. And she also asks how to distinguish dangerous mood swings in an adolescent child from standard experiences, which are also fluctuating in the general teenage population. Genovéva also talks about how the view of experts on personality disorders as such is gradually changing.
