We have been here many times and we even have one episode from this place. The fourth one in a row on our channel. We decided to make another return visit and this time show you how it all looks after three years. Unfortunately, the whole thing is not optimistic. Similarly, the history related to this palace, which we would like to present a bit more substantively than last time... In 1814, the estate in Kopytkowo was acquired by the merchant family von Plehn, while the palace itself most probably dates back to the third quarter of the 19th century (after 1870). It was built in the so-called Empire style, i.e. late classicism initiated in France in the years 1800-1815 and characterized by references to Roman, Greek and Egyptian architecture. It can also be added that this style was distinguished by strict symmetry, monumentality and excessive decorativeness combined with the austerity of architectural form. We will not find too much stucco in our palace, but there is plenty of austere and monumental atmosphere here. The von Plehns were considered to be extremely efficient, well-liked and respectful farmers. It was no different with a certain Johann (Hans) Gottfried von Plehn, who showed such care for the Poles employed on his estate that he allowed them to collect branches for firewood in the forest and graze cows on the count's estate. Sometimes, after the harvest, they would receive two sacks of potatoes. During his rule, the farm experienced a kind of renaissance. Thousands of sheep grazed on the vast pastures, as well as dozens of cows and horses. Three hundred pigs squealed in the pigsties, and in the local distillery, spirit was distilled from the potatoes. A radical change in the situation in the form of a deterioration in Polish-German relations was brought by the year 1939 and the aggression of Hitler's Third Reich against our country. Kopytkowo, located in the territory of the Second Polish Republic, was seized by German aggressors, and under the auspices of Hans von Plehn, who had been sympathetic to Poles, a temporary Gestapo detention center was organized in the palace cellars. Von Plehn himself became the chairman of the local Selsbtschutz - a paramilitary organization composed of Germans living in Poland, responsible for many crimes against their Polish neighbors. Why did Hans become a Pole-hating person? It is not fully known. The fact is that at the end of the war he escaped from his estate by plane, and earlier, by firing a rocket launcher, he set fire to nineteen stacks of grain. He left one so that the people there would not starve. Could it be another change of views due to the change in the geopolitical situation? We are also not sure. After the war, fate was not kind to our palace. The invading Soviet troops devastated its interior, burned the stylish furniture and drove the cattle. Later, the palace grounds became the property of the local State Agricultural Farm, while the building itself was converted into social housing. At the moment, there are no special prospects for the future and it is falling into inevitable ruin.
