They develop thick stems that become woody with age and are equipped with strong air roots, with which they cling to the bark of trees. Their adult leaves are usually incised or have holes, which protects their large surface from damage by wind and rain and ensures that light reaches the lower parts of the plant. Juvenile leaves do not have holes. Monsteras are related to philodendrons and, like them, have conquered our hearts by storm, to make themselves at home in our homes for good, where they are doing quite well. We value them above all for their beautiful large leaves associated with the jungle, wilderness and tropical climate. Monsteras are one of the most popular and valued plants currently grown in pots in apartments. They are quite easy to grow, grow quickly and rarely get sick, as long as we provide them with conditions that imitate their natural environment. Location - Monsteras grow well in bright places with diffused light and in slightly more shaded places. They do not tolerate exposure to full sun, which can burn and curl their beautiful leaves. Substrate - necessarily bigos, i.e. soil mixed with coconut chips, pine bark, perlite and expanded clay. In great need, they will cope in universal soil mixed with perlite, but they very poorly tolerate a production substrate that holds water near the roots for too long. Watering - in home conditions, we water Monsteras only when the soil dries out to a crisp. They react very badly to stagnant water in the pot - their leaves are then attacked by fungi that cause the formation of characteristic diffuse black spots with a yellow border. The most common problems - a mixture of poorly permeable, compacted and poorly aerated soil, excessive watering and cold are deadly for monsteras - then even all the leaves quickly become covered with fungal spots or may turn yellow, and the growth cones often rot. During hot weather and during the heating season, they are quite often attacked by thrips, so you need to watch them regularly from this angle. You should regularly clean their huge leaves, on which dust quickly collects, making gas exchange difficult. You can also not forget about intensive and regular fertilization during the growing season, because monsteras grow very quickly and are characterized by a large biomass, so their demand for nutrients is not small. Reproduction - monsteras can be easily propagated by shoot cuttings containing at least one node, preferably with aerial roots. They take root easily and quickly (in water, spghagnum or perlite), and after planting they quickly start growing. The most beautiful varieties available in the trade - the undoubted queen of our interiors is Monstera deliciosa and its collector's varieties with variegation - Monstera variegata, Monstera Thai Constellation or Monstera marmorata. Beautiful varieties also include the slightly smaller Monstera Monkey Mask with thin leaves or Monstera siltepecana.
