Around one billion people worldwide suffer from stress-related illnesses. The trend is on the rise. What protects those who remain healthy? Is their resilience innate? Or can they learn to withstand chronic stress and crises? This report takes us on a journey to the leading minds in resilience research, interviewing experts in epigenetics and neuroscientists. At Europe's largest resilience centre in Mainz, researchers are conducting a long-term study to find out what mechanisms people use to stay mentally healthy despite stress and crises. In the south of France, they meet Boris Cyrulnik, a pioneer in resilience research. His credo: it is not just individuals who must take responsibility for developing their resilience; society and politics must also create living conditions that facilitate stable mental health. We also tell the moving story of two families brought together by tragedy: After the violent death of their two sons, who were friends, they struggle to find their way back to life. Our experiences, our environment and our genes – everything influences our mental resilience. Resilience is neither a magic word nor a promise of happiness, but a lifelong learning process. #dwdocumentary #documentary #mentalhealth ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
