The oldest monastery in Wallachia, Tismana has remained for almost seven hundred years, a true spiritual oasis of Romanian Orthodoxy. Throughout its history, the monastery was a fortress, where many princely faces took shelter from the invaders. Tismana has been reborn every time and is waiting for us to discover it. The Tismana Monastery is located on a rock peak, on Mount Stârmina, surrounded by wooded peaks, near the Cave of Saint Nicodim. Water gushes from under its walls, cascading into the Tismana River. The famous traveler - deacon Paul of Aleppo, together with Patriarch Macarie of Antioch, visited the Tismana monastery in July 1657 and mentions in his book, written in Arabic "Travel Notes", among other things: "In truth, it no longer has similar neither in this country nor in another, by the beauty of the place and the settlement, by the multitude of its waters and the fortification it has, helped also by the protection of its surrounding walls". The founder of the monastery is the Venerable Nicodim the Saint from Tismana (1310–1406) - he chose the place where he built the holy place, as well as its architecture. The wall construction was made with the support of the Basarabi rulers.
