Prof. Dr. Armin D. Baum: How do you solve the synoptic problem? Episode 1: The synoptic findings The synoptic question is how the similarities and differences between Matthew, Mark and Luke in the choice of material, sequence of material and wording can be explained. This question is addressed in religious education, theology studies and in every thorough exegesis. Before you can answer the synoptic question independently, you must have understood it well. The synoptic overall findings are more complex than most Bible readers realize. In this first episode, Prof. Dr. Armin D. Baum (FTH Gießen) uses selected text examples, data and graphics to explain which individual questions make up the synoptic overall question: • Why did the evangelists only reproduce the wording of their originals to an average of 30-50%? • How is it that the synoptics sometimes only reproduced 10% of the wording of their originals, but in other places 90% and overall very inconsistently? • Why did the Synoptics reproduce Jesus' speeches so much more verbatim than the rest of the narrative material? • Why did the Synoptics reproduce the poetic passages much more verbatim than the rest of their originals? • Why did the Evangelists not, conversely, quote the Jesus stories and especially the words of Jesus more verbatim than the Old Testament or the words of the Old Testament prophets? • If Matthew and Luke independently used Mark as a source, why do they so often agree against Mark in the Markan material (minor agreements)? • What is the origin of the many wording changes that do not offer any stylistic improvement to the original? Conclusion: The synoptic problem can only be solved by taking this overall finding into account in all its facets.
