Children love a chocolate cake for their birthday. But polar bears? Polar bear girl Finja at Schönbrunn Zoo likes to eat melons, carrots and salmon. Her zookeeper Alessa Esau knows this of course and prepared a special surprise for Finja today on her first birthday. Esau: "We made an ice cream cake for Finja and froze her favourite treats in water. The one on top was filled with salmon." Very playful and curious: that's how you can describe Finja. This was also noticeable on her birthday. "Nora and Finja immediately sniffed the ice cream cake. Nora immediately secured the one and ate it, while Finja excitedly dismantled the rest of the ice cream cake." Finja is still a water rat. She loves taking her toys into the pool with her. Finja was born on November 9, 2019. At birth she weighed around 100 grams and was only as big as a guinea pig. Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck: "Our little polar bear has developed well. Finja already weighs half as much as her mother, about 120 kilograms." Finja was the first polar bear offspring in Vienna in 12 years and has captured the hearts of visitors. 20,964 name suggestions were sent in. The keepers decided on "Finja", the white and beautiful one. Anyone who would like to support the currently closed zoo can sponsor the little polar bear for an online donation of 15 euros at www.zoovienna.at. As a thank you, there is a lovely certificate and a name entry on the zoo's homepage. #finja #polarbear #birthday
