Dirk Steffens traces the forces that have shaped the United States of America since time immemorial. The destructive power of natural forces is causing problems for residents in many parts of the country. 80 percent of all earthquakes worldwide occur on the west coast, in California. This is where a massive crack in the ground runs, the San Andreas Fault. The vast plains in the middle of the USA are regularly hit by tornadoes. On the east coast, hurricanes, which are among the most dangerous storms in the world, crash into the continent. And in the northeast, but also as far as the Midwest, arctic polar air repeatedly leads to dangerous sudden cold snaps and snowstorms in winter. Entire cities are paralyzed as a result.
