At 77, Edith Willenberg is living her dream: she only makes jewelry. But it wasn't always like that. Even as a child, she was fascinated by the small, blue flame of the goldsmith who worked in her bedroom. Her mother was a master watchmaker - but she never liked that much because "then I can only repair things that other people have thought up," says Edith with a smile. At 17, she did her apprenticeship in her parents' business and became one of the youngest master goldsmiths in the country. At 18, she thought she would become a great artist. But it wasn't that easy. After her father had an accident, she took over her parents' jewelry business at an early age and hardly had any time to devote to her craft. She was suddenly faced with completely different challenges: being a mother, wife and boss as a woman in the 1970s. "There were certainly situations where an angry customer came into the shop and talked over me: 'I wanted to speak to the manager!' and I said: 'I'm sorry, you'll have to talk to me.'" But Edith Willenberg always knew how to help herself. "All the watch companies were only represented by men. I was then lucky enough to have a managing director who I instilled in him: 'We want to achieve this and that', and then everything went wonderfully smoothly because men negotiated with men." A few years ago she was finally able to pass the business on to her son. For Edith Willenberg, this was a liberating experience, as she herself says. "It's my goldsmith's shop, but no longer my shop. If someone needs advice, I come down and am happy that I'm needed, and otherwise I work upstairs." Quitting is not an option for the 77-year-old.
