A satellite is flying into space. Before that happens, engineers from Airbus Defence & Space have to build the “Sentinel 2c - Copernicus” satellite and prepare it for its journey into space. As a thermal engineer, Christopher and his team have to ensure that the satellite can withstand the extreme temperature conditions in space. If something were to break, it would be fatal. For many years, Airbus has been building all of the “Sentinel 2 Copernicus” series satellites for the European Space Agency (ESA) in a clean room in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. Two satellites in this series are already flying in space, and the Sentinel 2c satellite has been under construction and prepared for flight in space since 2018. The satellite will later take pictures of the Earth to document changes in the environment. Ultimately, the satellite is a camera in space. As a thermal engineer, Christopher is responsible for the satellite's heat regulation in space. All spacecraft are exposed to extreme temperatures in space. In space, for example, it is minus 270 degrees. The rays of the sun and the operation itself can heat up all of the satellite's components. Christopher and his team from Airbus Defence and Space must therefore prepare the satellite so that the satellite's hardware does not get too hot or too cold. For this purpose, a test campaign must be planned and carried out in order to simulate the conditions in space as realistically as possible. If something breaks or errors occur, these tests are associated with enormous costs and major delays in the tightly timed schedule. #Engineer #Airbus #alphaUni #spaceflight We have summarized more about career opportunities, skills and salary here: https://ardalpha.de/s/5j9QZ9y Author & Camera: Sebastian Leidecker Editing: Sebastian Eicher CvD: Friederike Kühn Channel Management: Marinus Zängerl Project Management: Lennart Bedford-Strohm Editor: Corinna Benning ---------------------------------- What is it like to study law?
