Since early 2014, Crimea has become the focus of the most dangerous crisis between East and West since the Cold War, when Russia took control of it with the largest military intervention in Europe since World War II. But what is the story of Crimea and why all this fighting over a peninsula that was once a gift from the Soviet Union to Ukraine and today may become the starting point for a third world war? Russia fought in several wars against the Ottoman Empire until it was finally able to occupy Crimea and turn it into a naval base for its fleet in the Black Sea. Then it fought again in the mini-world war known as the Crimean War in the mid-nineteenth century against the Ottoman Empire, Britain and France. Then the German Wehrmacht fought Hitler's army in World War II twice on the same land. Today, Russia is fighting its battles over Crimea against Ukraine, supported by NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to maintain Russia's control over Crimea and its maritime sovereignty in the Black Sea in the face of NATO's attempts to expand eastward towards the Russian border in a country that Russia considered for nearly a century a safe space between it and the Western powers represented by NATO.
