The Soviet intelligence service KGB gained a terrible reputation as the largest and best in the world and had the largest and most successful network of agents and spies inside and outside the Soviet Union. Since its establishment, the service has been described as the “sword and shield” of the Bolshevik Revolution and the Soviet Communist Party and the most powerful intelligence service in the world. The Soviet intelligence service KGB achieved great successes in its early stages, as the service was able to exploit the state of security laxity, peace and reassurance experienced by Western countries, led by the United States and Britain, and to plant agents for the service within the government agencies of those countries and even in their security and intelligence agencies as well. Perhaps the service’s greatest success was obtaining the secret of the atomic bomb from the heart of the Manhattan Project, which invented the bomb in the United States, thanks to its well-planted agents there and its spying on the American space project, although the Soviet missile program was more advanced and its planting of dangerous spies in the British intelligence service and in all ministries, even the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The history of the Soviet intelligence service dates back to before the establishment of the Soviet Union itself, as the Russian Empire was one of the first European countries to establish a state security service during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. The security system developed over time until the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, when Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin took the initiative to establish an intelligence agency that contributed to tracking down enemies of the revolution and its opponents at home and abroad. At the same time, Soviet Minister of War Leon Trotsky established a military intelligence agency. The names of the Soviet intelligence agency changed several times throughout history, but despite the name changes, the agency continued to perform its roles at home and abroad. With Joseph Stalin's rise to power in the Soviet Union, the Soviet intelligence agency was his iron fist with which he implemented agricultural collectivization policies and tracked down his political opponents at home and abroad, including Leon Trotsky and most members of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party. He then used it extensively during World War II, whether in spying on the Germans or sabotaging their military operations during World War II or in spying on his allies Britain and the United States. The KGB rose during the Cold War years when the spy war raged between the two camps of the Cold War. The current Russian leader Vladimir Putin was a KGB officer working undercover in East Germany when the Soviet Union collapsed. From this point, his rise to the top in Russia began.
