According to the majority opinion, Surah An'am was revealed all at once in Mecca. However, there is also an opinion that three or six of its verses were revealed in Medina. It has 165 verses. According to the order in the Mushaf, it is the 6th surah and according to the order of revelation, it is the 55th surah. The word اَلأنْعَامُ (An'am), which is the name of the surah, is used in Arabic to mean "domestic animals such as camels, cattle and sheep, wild animals such as gazelles, deer and some riding animals". This word is repeated six times in verses 136, 138, 139 and 142 of the surah.
