It’s the new BMW X3! It’s the fourth generation of BMW’s most popular SUV, but does the latest iteration offer enough to sway you towards rival cars like the Mercedes GLC? Let’s find out together. In terms of design, the looks of recent BMWs have been quite controversial, and that’s no exception with the new X3! However, we think it looks pretty smart, and the M50 version we’re reviewing has a really imposing presence on the road. At the front, there’s a large kidney grille paired with an aggressive front bumper that’s flanked by a set of real air intakes. The recess on the bonnet is also clever, reminding us of the M4. Along the side are black roof rails and M Sport side mirrors, while at the back there’s a set of nicely designed taillights paired with quad exhaust pipes. Inside, the X3 has a fairly minimalist design. There’s a large curved screen that houses the dials and infotainment system, and the seats are pretty comfortable too. However, the infotainment system can be a little confusing at times, especially when all the functionality is housed inside it – you won’t find any physical buttons here! What’s more, while some areas of the cabin are nice to touch, we saw quite a few areas covered in rough, cheap-feeling plastic. There are a number of engine options available. There’s a 2.0-litre diesel with 197bhp and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 208bhp. There’s a plug-in hybrid with the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine combined with an electric motor to produce 299bhp, while the range-topping M50 model gets a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 398bhp. As for pricing, the starting price is £48,000, with the top trim setting you back £67,000. But that's not all, we've bought everything we can, which means the car on review is now worth £77,000! So is it worth it? You and Matt will find out the answer at the end of the review, let's get started!
