As already seen, bearings by themselves cannot be used directly in machines. To do so, they must be installed in bearings. These bearings can be embedded in the parts themselves (with a machined fitting on the side of a machine, for example) or in individual parts. When this is the case, these parts are called bearings. Basically, any type of bearing can be accommodated in bearings. However, in industrial applications, the most commonly used types are self-aligning bearings. Bearings for these are produced with an extended inner ring, have channels with tightening screws and seals that ensure excellent performance and offer protection against harmful contaminants and effectively retain lubricant under severe operating conditions. Bearings with screw fixation have spherical outer diameters for use in housings with corresponding spherical inner surfaces to provide self-alignment. These bearings, due to their special production, can only be used in their respective housings. They are normally sealed radial contact ball bearings (support only radial loads). These bearings are housed in specially designed bearings in different formats, each with advantages for certain applications. Let us see below the main types of self-aligning bearings used and their main applications. • Support bearing (pedestal) The support bearing, also known as pedestal bearing, is one of the most widely used in industry. Its body is made of gray cast iron and designed to provide support to the shaft where the mounting surface is parallel to the direction of the shaft. The bores of the screw support bearing are usually grooved so that adjustment is possible during assembly. It is recommended for a wide range of industrial applications as it provides the user with the advantages of a single, compact housing that can be mounted in any position. The support bearing has a pre-lubricated bearing and is ready for immediate installation, but it also has a grease fitting that provides relubrication if required. • Flange bearing The flange type bearing has a different construction. Instead of being fixed parallel to the shaft, it is used in situations where the shaft crosses the machine structure from one side to the other. Due to its shape, this facilitates assembly and fixing to the face of the machine. There are 2 main types of flange bearings. One of them has an oval-shaped body and a reduced size, and is fixed by just 2 screws. In this case, it is recommended for low loads or in situations where there is little space for installation. The other, more common type is the square flange bearing, in which case it is fixed by means of 4 screws. • Tensioner bearing (stretcher) The tensioner bearing is also known as a tensioner bearing. Its bodies contain channels that allow it to be mounted on guides, thus making it possible to adjust the bearing in applications where it is necessary to stretch belts and chains, for example. Tensioner bearings provide efficient and very compact support for adjustable shafts and transport adjustment pulleys.
