Around 5,500 BC, the Ubaid Period began and the first city-states of Sumeria began to be established. In 5,400 BC, the city of Eridu was founded, considered the oldest city in southern Mesopotamia. Around 5,000 BC, the city of Uruk was founded, and in 4,100 BC, the Uruk Period began, marking the development of urban life in the Sumerian civilization. Around 3,800 BC, the city of Ur was founded, one of the most important cities in Sumeria. During the Uruk Period, the volume of goods transported along the canals and rivers of southern Mesopotamia facilitated the emergence of many large cities with populations of over 10,000. Around 3100 BC, the Jemdet Nasr Period began. This period is known as one of the formative stages of cuneiform writing, the oldest known writing system in the world. Around 2900 BC, the Early Dynastic Period began in Mesopotamia, a possible mythical period of Sumer. An ancient text written in the Sumerian language called the Sumerian King List lists the Sumerian kings from this period onwards. However, according to the list, the early reigns lasted thousands of years. Several dynasties ruled Sumer until 2334 BC, when the Sumerian civilization was conquered by the Akkadian Empire. In 2112 BC, the Third Dynasty of Ur, also known as the Neo-Sumerian Empire, was established by King Ur-Nammu and took control of the entire Sumerian civilization. This was a period of great prosperity for the Sumerian civilization, with the mass production of Sumerian texts, the trade of important raw materials with the Persian Gulf, and the development of culture through many types of art forms. However, in 2004 BC, the Third Dynasty of Ur was destroyed by the Elamites, and after the establishment of the First Babylonian Dynasty in 1894 BC by the Amorites, the Semitic peoples came to dominate the southern region of Mesopotamia, and the Sumerian language and name were eventually forgotten.
