The history of San Marino dates back to 4,000 BC, when a stone axe was discovered in the country's territory dating from that time. In 301, San Marino was founded, becoming the oldest republic in the world still in existence. For many centuries, San Marino resisted several attempts at invasion, mainly by the Papal States, but managed to secure its independence. The threats to the country's sovereignty ceased with the unification of Italy in 1861, with which it established several bilateral treaties. Until the 19th century, San Marino remained a feudal state, but from the second half of the century, the first socio-economic transformations began to take place with the first investments in technology and infrastructure in the country. For much of the first half of the 20th century, San Marino was dominated by fascism and communism, and from the second half of the century, San Marino strongly asserted its sovereignty and independence, maintaining diplomatic and consular relations with numerous European and American countries.
