The history of Israel began thousands of years ago. The oldest fossils of modern humans found in what is now Israel date back to around 120,000 years ago. These people were followed by other cultures and civilizations, including Semitic peoples such as the Canaanites, who disappeared during the period of Egyptian rule. After this, the Philistines, who came from the Aegean Sea region, and the Israelites, a branch of the Canaanite people, emerged in this region and gave rise to the United Kingdom of Israel, with Saul as its first king. Saul was succeeded by King David, his son, who managed to expand the kingdom's domains by defeating enemies such as the Philistines. David was succeeded by his son, Solomon, who built the First Temple, also called Solomon's Temple, and rebuilt several important cities. After Solomon's death, the United Kingdom of Israel was divided into the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah. The two kingdoms existed together until the Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 730 BC. This event caused many Israelites to migrate to Judah, causing the cultures of the two peoples to merge and the religion to become exclusively monotheistic, with Yahweh as the only god. Around 587 BC, the Kingdom of Judah was conquered by the Babylonians and became a province of the Neo-Babylonian Empire under the name of Jehud. Later, this territory would be conquered by the Persians of the Achaemenid Empire, by the Greeks of the Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great, by their successors the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Seleucid Empire, until it was finally conquered by the Romans and became known as the Kingdom of Judea.
