The history of the United States of America begins with the arrival of the first people who migrated from East Asia through the Bering Strait, which at the time was a large land bridge called Beringia, according to the most accepted theory. These people spread throughout North America, giving rise to several different peoples and cultures. In the 16th century, the first attempts to colonize the current US territory began by the Spanish, French and English, and after many failures, they began to have more success from the beginning of the 17th century, when other countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden also began to establish settlements in the territory. Over time, the Spanish consolidated their control over the Florida Peninsula and began to colonize the North American Southwest. The French managed to gain control over the interior of the territory, while the English managed to dominate the east coast, establishing the thirteen colonies that would later gain independence from the United States.
