Today we begin the Season of Advent, in which we are called to develop the virtue of vigilance and thus be prepared for the coming of the Lord. What we see among us, however, is the predominance of a lack of vigilance, which manifests itself on three distinct levels: i) in the indifference of those who are sunk in sin and deluded that the world will give them happiness; ii) in the constant naps of those who, from time to time, fall back into mortal sin; iii) in the automatism of those who are in a state of grace, but who have cooled in faith and can no longer see the presence of God in what they do. To these three groups of people, who in different ways are sinning against vigilance, the Lord addresses the words of today’s Gospel: “Keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, lest he come suddenly and find you sleeping.” This homily was given by Father Paulo Ricardo on this December 3, 2023, 1st Sunday of Advent, during Mass at the Cristo Rei Parish, in Várzea Grande (MT).
