It lies 1,000 meters below the ground. A treasure that has brought wealth to North Rhine-Westphalia: enormous salt mines. Tons are mined and processed day after day. Salt is a raw material, a foodstuff and a medicine. And it shapes large parts of the country. The raw material has been lying in the earth's layers on the Lower Rhine for 250 million years. In the Rhenish salt pan, miners and blasting experts work deep down in 40 degree heat. Every few minutes they bring a whole truckload of rock salt to the surface. This is immediately used to produce table salt, pharmaceutical products or de-icing salt. ????
