Nicolae Ceaușeșcu (1918–1989), Romanian politician and president, started as a youth in the then illegal Communist Party and ended up in prison for two and a half years. And not for the first time... However, contacts from prison helped him on the way to power. He becomes a member of parliament, deputy minister of agriculture and later deputy minister of the armed forces, after which he is the second man in the country for 11 years. In 1965, he becomes the general secretary of the party and the de facto ruler of the country. Thanks to his foreign-political actions, he is known as the most popular communist in the West.
