About :

In this episode: Tokyo seems to expand almost infinitely. 38 million people live in an area as big as Corsica. In the middle of the gigantic metropolis, on the shores of Tokyo Bay, lies the former imperial city. The typical Japanese encounter of tradition and modernity also takes place on the roofs here. Tea ceremonies and competitive sports: At lofty heights, old traditions are maintained and new trends introduced on the roofs of the Japanese metropolis of Tokyo. In Otsuka, a district in the north of the city, you can witness one of the oldest Japanese rituals: the Chado or tea ceremony. Mrs. Hikichi has dedicated her entire life to this ancient tradition. In Hino, the martial art of Kendo is practiced on the roof of the Dojo Renseikaikan under the expert guidance of Master Azumori Toyomura. Kendo is the modern form of the traditional sword fighting Kenjutsu, which the samurai practiced in feudal Japan. Today it is a competitive sport. In the chic Ginza district, which is popular with tourists, you can find idyllic landscapes on some roofs. For example, every year a real rice field grows on the building of a well-known sake producer, planted and cared for by Asami Oda. In some places, behind ventilation systems and all kinds of pipes, small altars are hidden, to which only the initiated have access. These are mainly Shinto shrines used to worship a kami, a deity or the spirit of a deceased ancestor. In the Azabu-Juban district, there are plenty of roof terraces that are rather quiet. With one exception: the terrace of the restaurant owner Tetsuo Fujii, a specialist in himono, the ancient Japanese tradition of drying fish in the air. On the roof of a building in Ginza that houses a famous French luxury brand, celebrity chef Alain Ducasse has set up a chic terrace for gourmets and given the poetic name "Le Jardin de Tweed" - a tribute to Coco Chanel.
