In July 2021, South Africa experienced an outbreak of violence not seen in 30 years, the official date of the end of apartheid. Rioting and looting in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal left 300 people dead. The violence did not spread from there, but the fire is still smoldering. In Hout Bay, a few kilometers from Cape Town, residents have managed to maintain social peace despite the economic difficulties many people are facing. The city is divided into three parts, a white district "The Valley", a mixed district "Hangberg" and a black district "Imizamo Yethu", like South Africa, only on a small scale. Little has changed here in the last 30 years. The boundaries between the districts still exist in the minds of many residents. Only a road separates the world of the wealthy with their villas and huge plots of land from the world of the overcrowded townships. But this geographical proximity has fostered a remarkable solidarity with the poorest in Hout Bay, especially since the start of the Covid pandemic. #southafrica #houtbay #reportage Video available on Youtube until 14/10/2051 Subscribe to ARTE's Youtube channel: / artede Follow us on social networks: Facebook: / arte.tv Twitter: / artede Instagram: / arte.tv
