What will the forest of the future look like? This is a topic of much discussion. Not just among foresters. One possible concept: creating permanent forests. A permanent forest is more than just a mixed forest. In a permanent forest there are thick and thin, old and young trees. And it is about maximum diversity in tree species. Christoph Arndt looks after such a permanent forest at the Fürstlich Castell'schen Forestry Administration. Because a permanent forest needs a lot of care. Each tree species has different needs and reacts differently to human intervention. When it comes to natural forest management, the forester must proceed carefully. A permanent forest is not a natural forest, but a commercial forest, in other words: the forest owners can continue to harvest wood. The idea comes from the forestry scientist Alfred Möller, who developed it 100 years ago: the forest as an organism that regenerates itself. This could be a solution for the forest in climate change.
