November 27, 2020Atami is a place where hot springs spring up because Mt. Hakone falls directly into the sea, but because of this, there was almost no space to build a station. There is so little land that it has a rare sharp curve among the Shinkansen in Japan. From the 0 series to the 700 series, the limit was 160 km/h, and even the N700 series had a limit of 185 km/h, which is +25 km/h, so it is necessary to slow down by 100 km/h from the maximum speed. That would be fine, but because the site is too narrow, it is the only station on the Tokaido Shinkansen line that cannot install a passing track, and while the Kodama and Hikari trains are stopping, which is a fatal speed reduction for the Shinkansen, the following Nozomi trains cannot overtake them, which is (thought to be) a bottleneck in creating the timetable. Also, when Atami Onsen was extremely popular, there was a train that ran between Tokyo and Atami, but since the Kodama bound for Atami could not turn around, it seems that it had to be sent all the way to Shizuoka (Mishima and Shin-Fuji had not yet opened at the time) and then turned around. Furthermore, because it was dangerous for high-speed trains at 160km/h to pass by the side of the platform, ticket gates were not opened and entry to the platform was prohibited until just before the Kodama departed.
