Heinzels Wintermärchen is one of the most enchanting Christmas markets in Cologne, inspired by the magical world of elves. Every detail of this market is reminiscent of a fairy tale, from the rustic decorations to the stalls full of traditional crafts. One of the highlights is the ice skating rink, which delights adults and children alike (skates can be rented for around €7). For food, you can find classics such as Bratwurst (€4-5), Reibekuchen (potato pancakes for around €3) and the irresistible Glühwein (mulled wine) served in collectible decorative mugs (deposit €3-4). It’s the perfect place to lose yourself in the lights, aromas and Christmas music. Cologne Cathedral (Dom Christmas Market) Located next to the majestic Cologne Cathedral, this market is a spectacle in itself. Set against the imposing backdrop of the cathedral, the market has a unique and vibrant atmosphere. Here, you can browse over 150 stalls offering everything from handmade Christmas decorations to delicacies such as the famous Currywurst (€6) and chocolate-covered Belgian waffles (€5). Another highlight is the large illuminated fir tree, which has become a symbol of Christmas in Cologne. Live performances by choirs and musicians make the experience even more special. The Angels Christmas Market (My favorite!) The Angels Christmas Market, or “Markt der Engel”, is simply magical and was my favorite! Located in Neumarkt, this market is known for its sophisticated decorations and welcoming atmosphere. The lighting is especially charming, with lights that simulate stars shining over the stalls. The “angels” who roam the market dressed in themed costumes add a special touch to the ambiance. Among the gastronomic highlights are the Kaiserschmarrn (Austrian pancakes cut into pieces, for around €6) and the traditional Raclette, served with bread (€7-8). Here, every detail is thought out to create a cozy atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the Christmas spirit. These markets are an unmissable experience for anyone visiting Cologne at Christmas.
