Joel has always been a handsome, healthy and vain man! He never leaves the house without being properly shaved, well dressed and with his hair neat. In fact, if an unexpected guest comes home, he never arrives untidy, not even in the living room! There is a saying that goes: “Beauty will save the world.” There is another saying that goes: “If you want to fix the world, start by fixing yourself.” This is how I see Joel’s beauty, a mix of self-love and self-care, but also of generosity and love for others. After all, beauty will always be linked to goodness and love. Genuinely kind, he is a man who does not like to say no. He finds the word “no” to be too strong, too harsh. He prefers the delicacy of a “maybe,” the possibility of a “who knows.” Genuinely elegant, he went through difficult times in his life in silence, never complaining or complaining to others. On the contrary, he always accepted them, quietly and resiliently. Genuinely peaceful, Joel would rather be at a disadvantage than have a more serious problem. In his opinion, a bad deal, in extreme situations, is the best medicine to promote peace and balance. Genuinely fair, he has a big heart, but also a great sense of responsibility. It is precisely this combination that will make him assess situations impartially and wisely. Genuinely reserved, he lives his life with discretion and sobriety. Even his love for his parents appears in different ways, whether in his love for this land, in the chimes of the clock that belonged to his mother, or in contemplating the century-old bougainvillea in the front garden of the house. We have many memories with him. Walks on the farm, contemplative moments on the porch, conversations at the breakfast table, hunting stories, family stories, games in the garden, on the watermill, cows in the pasture, the smell of manure, but also the smell of Zé Pajem's delicious food. Many people joke that it is the plate of milk with cornmeal after lunch that promotes all this youth. I wonder what the secret is for him being such a special person. I wonder, but I'm in no hurry to understand, after all, the inspiration he is to our lives is our greatest gift. May 13, 2023 was the day to celebrate my beloved grandfather Joel Garcia de Carvalho's 100th birthday.
