Today we are guests on the little-known Gera-Saalfeld route, whose traffic volume is essentially limited to the Erfurt railway, which runs every hour; a manageable number of freight trains also serve the Lederhose tank farm near Niederpöllnitz and the Thüringen steelworks in Unterwellenborn. This video sheds light on the history of this main line, which has always been in the shadow of the Leipzig-Hof-Nuremberg/Regensburg and Leipzig-Jena-Saalfeld routes. The focus is on the infrastructure, which between Weida and Saalfeld was at best adapted to requirements, but never completely modernized - the main reason to take a closer look at the route, because there is a lot to discover. Climb aboard and come along!
