End of the school year. Teachers have finished their grades and are preparing for the long vacation. Parents and children smile with pride and optimism. The President of Romania also appeared in public, speaking to the country from among some students. This is what an educated Romania looks like. But there is another Romania. That of the children who got lost along the way and which forces teachers in rural areas to take a parallel assessment: that of the students who dropped out of school. Pushed by poverty and the lack of interest of the authorities or held captive by the mentality of their parents, hundreds of thousands of students have dropped out of school in recent years. Romania ranks first in the European Union in the rate of early school leaving. I have been to several communities that are facing a high rate of school dropout to understand how these children live and what keeps them away from school. I met teachers who are making efforts not to lose their students during the year, but who feel disarmed that the state does not have a coherent policy to reduce this phenomenon. This is what uneducated Romania looks like. -------------------------- Recorder is an online publication built by a team of journalists around these principles: honest journalism, done with passion and put in the public service.
